The Importance of Mentors in Engineering Education
Engineering education does not end with lectures and exams.

Although the faculty provides us with the foundation, we most often gain a real understanding of what it means to be an engineer through people with experience - our mentors. They are the ones who share personal experiences and help us better understand how the profession functions in the real world.

Mentors do not speak to us only in theoretical terms. They explain what a typical working day of an engineer looks like, the kinds of problems engineers face, and how decisions are made in practice. Through examples from their own experience, they show us that engineering is not always as “ideal” as it appears on paper. It requires critical thinking, patience, and adaptability.

One of the most important roles of a mentor is guidance. As students, we often do not know which track is most suitable for us or what it truly means to work in a particular field.

How do you know which direction to choose?

Mentors help us recognize our strengths and provide honest advice on where we can progress the most. This guidance is essential, as it can shape our future professional path.

Beyond knowledge, they also introduce us to how the real work environment functions. They explain how teamwork is done, how to communicate with colleagues and supervisors, how to meet deadlines, and how to take responsibility. These skills are rarely taught in lectures, yet they are essential once we begin working.

In engineering education, they serve as a bridge between the academic environment and industry, transfer experience gained from real projects and prepare new generations of engineers for the actual demands of the profession. In this way, continuity of knowledge is created, and sustainable quality in engineering practice is ensured.

Mentoring therefore holds great value in engineering education. Through support, advice, and shared experiences, mentors help students transition more easily from academic life to professional practice.
